CDL Equipment Operator

Full Time, Non-Exempt

Job Summary

Experience operating Micro Trenching Equipment and/or Mini Excavators is strongly desired. Experience digging around utilities strongly preferred. An active CDL is required.

Job Responsibilities
  • Prepares truck and machinery daily, includes but not limited to: checking oil, fueling, greasing, preventative maintenance, cleaning trailer, stocking with supplies, emptying garbage, checking lights on trailer, running through the DOT inspection list daily.
  • Organizes and oversees inventory of tools and daily preparation of truck and machinery.
  • Surveys job site for Blue Stakes, sprinklers, other obstacles, etc. before digging.
  • Loads and unloads equipment.
  • Operates backhoe or excavator, Hand digs trench two feet either side of marked utilities for location before trenches are dug by machinery.
  • Spots for machine operator while trench is being dug.
  • Backfills trenches and compacts the filling.
  • Replaces all landscape removed during any job, making every effort in meeting the satisfaction of the customer and the public.
  • Handles traffic control.
  • Completes paperwork daily, in a neat and legible fashion.
  • Paperwork includes but is not limited to: time cards, charge-outs, coding of receipts, detail checklist, DOT forms, etc.
  • Maintains a checklist on equipment, materials used, man hours, etc.
  • Communicates directly with the foreman in safety needs, work needs, and individual needs. Actively participates in crew and safety meetings.
  • Follows established safety rules on job site, to and from job site, and uses common sense in maintaining a safe environment for self, team members, customers, and public.
  • Reports progress of jobs to Foreman and discusses any problems for resolution. Monitors and verifies quality control and uniformity of work.
  • Travel may be required
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A positive can-do attitude and openness to trying things new ways

  • Previous experience in the telecom, utility, construction, and/or engineering industry
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in telecommunications or underground utilities industry is a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment         
  • Must be able and willing to conduct strenuous and physically demanding tasks for long hours, work outdoors and in inclement weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift and carry materials of all shapes and sizes, weighing 40 to 90 pounds
  • Must be able to maintain visual and audible contact with other crewman and all moving or stationary persons/vehicles/objects to ensure safe coordination of movement
  • Must be able to operate or workaround heavy equipment and machinery
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl while performing work
  • Must be able to work while wearing safety boots, safety glasses, hardhat, and any applicable safety gear
